Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I use a professional charter service?

A: Using a professional charter boat with an experienced, U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain, not only ensures a safe trip, but also tips the odds in your favor of catching alot of fish. These captains do this for a living, some of us are out 7 days a week. We share information with other captains, so we know where the fish are every day. Our boats are rigged with the latest fishing and electronic equipment, and our fishing tackle is easy to use and kept in excellent condition.

Q: Is a fishing license required?

A: All persons age 16 or older are required to have a fishing license. A resident or non-resident one day Fishing License can be purchased on board the Migrator. If you already have a State of Illinois Fishing License, you must have the Lake Michigan Salmon Stamp affixed to the back. No Lake Michigan Salmon Stamp is required with the one day license. The 2004 Illinois one day license was $5.50. Or if you would like to purchase a Fishing License online, please click on this link: FISHING LICENSE   It’s fast and easy!

Q: Do I need to bring any fishing equipment?

A: No. All fishing equipment is provided for you on board the boat. All our equipment is easy to use and in excellent working order.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Weather can change quickly in the Chicago land Area, so we recommend bringing some warm clothing and rain gear. Remember, it is always cooler on the water in the spring because of the water temperature. Please wear soft – solid shoes (tennis, deck shoes) on board.

Q: Do we bring our own food and refreshments?

A: Yes, also bring a small cooler with ice to keep it in. Alcohol is allowed providing you are 21. Please bring cans instead of bottles because of the possibility of breakage.

Q: Fish cleaning?

A: Fish cleaning is available on board the Migrator, But if you prefer to do it yourself that is ok.

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are located at Northpoint Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. Winthrop Harbor is on the Illinois & Wisconsin border and very accessible from I-94. Some of the finest Salmon & Trout fishing in Lake Michigan is located just a few miles from the harbor mouth.

Q: How far do we go offshore?

A: The reason I keep The Migrator at Northpoint Marina, is the close proximity to deep water and fish. During certain times of the year, we start fishing at the harbor mouth, and we rarely go out farther than 5 miles. Less running time means more fishing time for you!

Q: Is there any age limit for bringing children?

A: My best advice is that children under 6 years old may not enjoy the trip and might make it hard for the other people on board. Children age 10 or under should have an adult per child to assist them in having a great time fishing!

Q: What if I have never fished before?

A: Don't worry, our fishing tackle is very easy to use and quite capable of handling the biggest fish in Lake Michigan. Your captain will instruct you on how to use the fishing equipment and give tips on fighting the fish. Don't be afraid to ask questions, we will try to be as helpful as we can. We want you to enjoy yourself as much as possible.

Q: How many people can I bring?

A: In compliance with the Coast Guard Regulations, we may carry a MAXIMUM of six (6) passengers.
